GB para squad medals at the Slovenian Open

The GB squad continued their successful build-up to London 2012 by winning  3 Gold medals, 3 Silver medals and 3 bronze medals in the team events at the Slovenian Open,  taking their overall tally of medals at this tournament to 4 Gold, 4 Silver and 3 Bronze medals.    The  combined  Mens class 5 team of Tommy Urhaug ( Norway) and Scott Robertson beat Eygpt  3-1  in the final    Our leading  wheelchair junior player, Jack Hunter-Spivey , was also part of the team, gaining valuable experience by playing in the doubles during the group matches.    David Wetherill combined with Peter Rosenmeier ( Denmark) in the Class 6 team event to take the gold medal, beating Russia 3-0 in the semis and Germany in the final, also 3-0.    The other Gold medal came from Victoria Bromley in Ladies class 11 team.  Unfortunately, only two teams entered.       .

Rob Davies and Paul Davies took a silver medal in the Mens Class 1 team event ,  losing 3-1 to Korea in the final.  Sue Gilroy teamed up with Alena Kanova (Slovakia) to take silver in the ladies Class 4 team event.  Probably, one of the best GB performances was by Paul Karabardak in the mens class 7 team event.   With Will Bayley, his normal partner entered with the Mens Class 8 team, Paul played with Jordi Morales from Spain and this proved to be a formidable pairing as they  beat Germany 3-1 in the semi-final but lost to Ukraine 3-1 in the final to take the silver.

Sara Head and Jane Campbell beat Italy in the ladies class 3 team bronze playoff to take the bronze.  Kim  Daybell, playing with Deszo Berecki ( Hungary ) won bronze in the Mens Class 11 team event and Adam Thompson won his first international medal in Para Table tennis, taking bronze in the  Mens class 11 team event, his partner being Richard Vallee from France.

The mens class 8 team of Ross Wilson and Aaron Mckibbin lost to Hungary 3-2 in the semis  and narrowly lost to Poland in the match for bronze 3-2 and so finished fourth.

The next international event that the squad will compete at will be at the end of May in the Slovakian Open.   For full results of the Slovenian Open team event, click Lasko_Team_Event___Final__results.
